Art Nouveau Portrait – Irene Carver, c.1940

Irene is my mother-in-law, and this Mother’s Day I really wanted to honour her as she is no longer with us. Unfortunately, this art nouveau portrait took a lot longer to complete due to work deadlines and how much detail I decided to add. Better late than never. Irene was a beautiful woman, and this portrait of her is taken from a photo that would be dated c. 1940. I never had the pleasure of meeting my mother-in-law, but I often see her soft side in my husband, Stephen, and my son often looks like her when he doesn’t look like me. For this piece I wanted to take inspiration from Art Nouveau, having a love for Mucha, and also because I am lucky enough to work for a University that has a gallery on campus, and I’ve had the opportunity to see art work by Alphonse Mucha in an exhibition called ‘In Quest of Beauty’.
